GAME RECAP / BOX SCORE

Freedom Drop Road Opener to Wild Things 11-1
Watson Homer Accounts for Only Run

The host Washington Wild Things scored six runs in the sixth inning Sunday night and rolled to an 11-1 Frontier League baseball victory over the Florence Freedom before a sold-out crowd at Consol Energy Park in Washington, Pa.

Florence center fielder Reggie Watson led the game off with his first home run of the season but that was all the offense the Freedom could muster against a pair of Washington right-handers – starter Michael Hauff and reliever Justin Staatz. Hauff, who was making his debut with the Wild Things, settled down after Watson’s leadoff homer. The former North Carolina A&T star fanned nine batters, including the final five hitters he faced, on the way to a five-inning outing that earned him his first Frontier League win. Staatz picked up his first save by working four innings of shutout relief. Freedom starter Jason Bowlin is now 0-1 after allowing four runs in 4 2/3 innings. The big blow off Bowlin was a three-run homer by Washington first baseman Robbie Knapp in the third inning that put the Wild Things in the lead for the first time.

The Freedom used a total of five pitchers, including a perfect eighth inning turned in by Eddie Gonzalez, a catcher/infielder who took the mound for the first time in his career.

Florence is now 2-3 after dropping three straight games to Washington. The same two teams close out a two-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 pm EDT at Consol Energy Park. Right-hander Dave Watkins makes his first appearance on the mound for Florence. He’ll be opposed by Washington right-hander Aaron Ledbetter (1-0).
