Second baseman Joe Holland singled with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning Wednesday night to drive in a pair of runs and help the visiting Florence Freedom to a 10-6 victory over the Slippery Rock Sliders at Jack Critchfield Park in Slippery Rock, Pa.

The win was the Freedom’s first road victory of the year (1-3) and ended the team’s overall five-game losing streak. Florence and Slippery Rock are now tied for third place in the Frontier League East Division with identical 3-5 records.

With the score tied at 6-6, Holland lined a hit to left field off Sliders reliever Kory Bucklew, scoring Tim Grogan and Josh Lex to give the Freedom an 8-6 advantage. Florence tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth inning on an RBI single by rookie right fielder Dan Guttridge and a sacrifice fly off the bat of shortstop Greg Stone.

The Freedom overcame a short outing by starting pitcher Chris Webb, who was knocked out of the game in the third inning after allowing five runs on six basehits. The Freedom bullpen then took over with an outstanding seven innings of relief, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out nine.

Rookie Matt Marksbury improved to 2-0 with the win. Marksbury retired all four batters he faced, striking out one. The loser was Slippery Rock reliever Pete Parise (0-1).

Florence and Slippery Rock continue their series with the third game of a four-game set Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. EDT at Jack Critchfield Park. Two left-handers will match up on the mound – Grant Payton (0-1) for Florence and Derek Griffith (0-0, first appearance) for Slippery Rock.
