THREE SLIPPERY ROCK HURLERS COMBINE TO SHUT OUT FLORENCE 2-0
Stone Gets Both Freedom Hits, Bullpen Shines Again
Three Slippery Rock pitchers combined to shut out the Florence Freedom on two hits Thursday night and the host Sliders earned a 2-0 Frontier League victory at Jack Critchfield Park in Slippery Rock, Pa. Shortstop Greg Stone accounted for both Freedom hits with a pair of singles. The Claremore, Okla., native also walked twice to reach base safely four times in five trips to the plate. Slippery Rock left-hander Derek Griffith picked up the win in his first appearance for the Sliders. Griffith allowed six walks but only one hit as he kept the Freedom off the scoreboard thru the first five innings. Left-hander Justin Robinson continued to silence the Freedom bats with three scoreless innings in relief, and closer Greg Lasinski came on in the ninth to nail it down for his fourth save in as many opportunities this season and his second of the series for Slippery Rock. The expansion Sliders collected two runs on five hits off Freedom starter and loser Grant Payton (0-2) in his 3 2/3 innings of work. For the second straight night, the Freedom bullpen was nearly invincible. Right-hander Brian McCullough allowed only one baserunner in 3 2/3 innings, while lefty Jon Troop finished up with a perfect eighth inning. Florence had its chances to score runs but stranded 10 base runners, including leaving runners at second and third in three of the first five innings. Slippery Rock (4-5) has now won two of the first three games between the two teams with the finale of the four-game series scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EDT tomorrow night at Jack Critchfield Park. Right-hander Jason Bowlin (0-1) will be looking for his first win of the season for the Freedom (3-6), while the Sliders will counter with right-hander Nick Tracy (0-0).
