Grogan's Homer Keys Freedom Win at Chillicothe
Dunning Earns Second Straight Win
Tim Grogan hit a three-run homer to key a five-run fourth inning Sunday night to spark the visiting Florence Freedom to a 6-2 victory over the host Chillicothe Paints at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. Right-hander Nick Dunning (2-0) was the beneficiary of the Freedom offensive outburst. The rookie from Trenton, Ill., allowed two runs on only two hits in 5 2/3 innings with four strikeouts and three walks to earn his second straight win. Left-hander Jason Bennion finished up on the mound with two scoreless innings for the Freedom. Bennion gave up four base hits and fanned three. Grogan’s home run was his third of the season, and his second at VA Memorial Stadium. Rookie left fielder Ryan Basham added a pair of run-scoring hits to the Freedom attack. Basham drove in the first Florence run with an infield hit in the third, and the native of Lowell, Ind., tacked on an insurance run when his run-scoring double scored Reggie Watson in the seventh. With the win the Freedom snapped a seven-game road losing streak and improved their overall season record to 17-21. Chillicothe fell to 16-22 with the loss, and the Paints are now 3-7 in head-to-head meetings with the Freedom this season. Florence continues its current road trip with a pair of games at Slippery Rock against the Sliders on Monday and Tuesday. Left-hander Josh Bruns (1-0, 2.25) gets the start in Monday’s 7:05 pm start at Jack Critchfield Park in Slippery Rock, Pa.
