GAME RECAP / BOX SCORE

Holland, Grogan Lift Freedom to 4-2 Win at Slippery Rock
Freedom End Road Trip with 3-1 Record

Second baseman Joe Holland’s second RBI single of the night scored Tim Grogan from third base in the eighth inning Tuesday night to break a 2-2 tie and lift the visiting Florence Freedom to a 4-2 Frontier League baseball victory over the Slippery Rock Sliders at Jack Critchfield Park.

The Freedom added an insurance run in the ninth when Grogan was caught in a rundown on an attempted steal of second base and Beau Blacken, the runner at third, scored standing up before Grogan was tagged out to end the inning.

Florence right-hander Domingo Acosta limited Slippery Rock to only two runs in six innings in his second start of the season. Acosta scattered 11 hits, including a pair of run-scoring hits by Sliders designated hitter Bryan Vickers. Vickers reached Acosta for a two-out RBI double in the fourth to score the Sliders’ first run, and added an RBI triple in the sixth with two outs to score the tying run.

Right-hander Cody Castle worked 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win in his first decision of the season. Rookie left-hander Jason Bennion, a former Wright State University star, recorded the final four outs to pick up his first career save.

Grogan, a Covington Catholic High School graduate, and Holland paced the Florence offense with three hits each. Grogan scored a pair of runs, while Holland drove in half of the team’s runs.

Florence ended its current road trip with three wins in four games, and improved its overall mark to 19-21. The Freedom begin a six-game home stand at 4 p.m. EDT Wednesday at Champion Window Field when they take on the Evansville Otters.
