GAME RECAP / BOX SCORE

ACOSTA, FREEDOM BREEZE PAST SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 8-1
Stone Surpasses Galloway on Freedom Career Hit List

Converted reliever Domingo Acosta hurled a complete-game seven-hitter and Greg Stone collected three hits to move atop the Florence Freedom career hit list as the Freedom cruised to an 8-1 win at Southern Illinois Saturday night at Rent One Park.

Stone, who joined the Freedom late in the 2005 season, entered Saturday’s game needing two hits to tie Mike Galloway atop the Florence career hit list. Galloway, a right-handed hitting outfielder, compiled 170 hits while wearing a Florence uniform in 2005 and part of the 2006 season. Stone singled in the second inning, and after striking out and grounding out in his next two at-bats, pulled a drive into the right-field corner in the top of the eighth inning that resulted in an inside-the-park home run that tied Galloway. Stone got to the plate one more time in the ninth against tough left-hander Brian Logan and stroked a basehit to left-center field for his record 171st hit with the Freedom.

Every player in the Florence lineup had at least one hit as the Freedom totaled 17 hits off four Southern Illinois pitchers.

Acosta’s complete game was the first of his career and the win was his first with the Freedom. The right-hander from New York City walked three and fanned four.

The teams wrap up their three-game series at 3:05 p.m. EDT Sunday at Rent One Park in Marion, Ill.
