Freedom Ninth-Inning Comeback Falls Short in 4-3 Loss at Evansville
Team back at home for two games starting Thursday
The Evansville Otters scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday night to break a 2-2 tie and lift the hosts to a 4-3 victory over the Florence Freedom at Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind. Tim Grogan blasted his sixth home run of the season to lead off the second inning and tie the game at 1-1. The Freedom then took a 2-1 lead against Evansville right-hander Jimmy Conroy (5-5) in the fourth when catcher Josh Lex singled with one out, stole second and scored on shortstop Tony Perez’ two-out base hit to left. The Freedom lead was short-lived, though, as Evansville DH Mike Spry connected in the bottom of the inning for a solo home run to once again tie the score at 2-2. Florence starter Alain Quijano (1-5) lost his fifth consecutive decision. The left-hander from Des Moines, Ia., allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Right-hander Jason Bowlin worked a scoreless eighth out of the Florence bullpen. The Freedom scored a run in the ninth against Evansville closer Mike Bille and had the tying run on third with two outs before Mike Wadowski grounded out to first for the final out. Bille walked the first two batters he faced in the inning and Grogan bunted the runners into scoring position with one out. Josh Lex’s groundout to short scored Beau Blacken to cut the Otters’ lead to a single run and moved pinch-runner Collin Martin to third but the Freedom would fall a run short to drop their second game in a row. Freedom rookie left fielder Ryan Basham singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 18 consecutive games, a season-high for a Florence player. The Freedom, who finished their six-game road trip to Southern Illinois and Evansville with a 2-4 record, return home for a two-game series with Slippery Rock on Thursday and Friday nights. Both games will begin at 7:05 p.m. EDT at Champion Window Field in Florence.
