Florence Freedom lose wild opener 13-12
15 hits, 12 runs not enough as bullpen struggles
For the first time in three years, the Florence Freedom have dropped their season opener. The Florence Freedom got off to a hot start and jumped to an early 3-0 lead after the second inning. The Freedom scored three runs in the bottom of the second including a two run home run from John Welch. The Kalamazoo Kings scored a run in the top of the 4th inning to cut the lead to 3-1. However, fueled by home runs from Tim Grogan and Nick Salotti; Florence sent eight batters to the plate and scored five runs in the 5th. Florence had an 8-1 heading into the 7th when the bullpen struggles began. Kalamazoo scored five times in the top of the seventh, fueled by a grand slam home run by Simon Williams. In the bottom of the 7th Florence got two runs to extend the lead. The Freedom now possessed a 10-7 lead heading into the top of the 8th inning when things began to unravel. Stephen Shao got ahead of the lead-off hitter Ramos 0-2. On the third pitch of the at bat an errand pitch hit Ramos. Shao walked the next hitter, Jeff Grose, on four straight pitches. Shao got ahead of the third hitter, Kyle Kmiecik, 0-2 and again threw a wild pitch which hit Kmiecik loading the bases. Florence manager Jamie Keefe went to his bullpen to bring in Joaquin Canizall. Canizall walked the first batter he faced which forced in a run. Rothford then hit a single to right field which scored two runs. Matt Hudgins hit a three run home run to extend the Kalamazoo lead to 13-10. The Freedom relievers struggled with their control as Kalamazoo scored 11 runs on only 4 hits during the 7th and 8th innings. Florence scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to cut the lead to 13-12. After a flawless top of the 9th the Freedom were down only one run heading into the bottom of the 9th. Leadoff hitter Jeff Landry was hit by a pitch and awarded first. Johnny Washington laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Landry into scoring position with one out. After a strike out from Tim Grogan the left fielder Ryan Basham drew a walk from Kalamazoo closer Brandon Parillo. A wild pitch sent Basham to second and put the winning run in scoring position. The Florence Freedom, who recorded 15 hits in the baseball game, needed one more. Angel Molina grounded out to the shortstop to end the game. The Florence Freedom lost a wild slugfest 13-12.
