Freedom Comeback Bid Falls Short in 8-7 Loss to Kings
Four-run ninth ends with bases-loaded line drive
The Florence Freedom rallied with four runs in the bottom of the ninth but came up a run short in an 8-7 Frontier League loss to visiting Kalamazoo Friday night at Champion Window Field. The Freedom (1-2) pulled to within a run and had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth when Kalamazoo shortstop Kyle Kmiecik snared John Welch’s line drive and flipped it to second to double off pinch-runner Billy Mottram and end the rally. Kalamazoo (2-1) won two of the three games in the season-opening series. The Kings jumped on Freedom left-hander Chris Ingoglia (0-1) for five runs in the second inning. Designated hitter Brendan Murphy and Kmiecik each contributed a two-run double to the early uprising. The Freedom bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the second against Kings right-hander John Brownell (1-0). A two-out single to right by Freedom left fielder Ryan Basham plated the third run of the inning but a strong throw to the plate by Kings right fielder Cody Youngblood cut down Jeff Landry at the plate for the third out. Brownell worked six innings to get the win. Left-hander Brandon Parillo picked up his second save in his second appearance of the series. Ingoglia was roughed up for six runs in 4 2/3 innings in his Freedom debut. The native of Port St. Lucie, Fla., was tagged with the loss despite recording eight strikeouts. Six different Florence hitters drove in runs, led by third baseman Tim Grogan’s two RBIs. Basham and right fielder Angel Molina keyed the Freedom’s 10-hit attack with a pair of hits apiece. Infielder Christian Lopez made his Freedom debut when he took over for Jeff Landry at second base in the top of the ninth. The rookie from Comerio, Puerto Rico rifled a one-out double to right to jumpstart the ninth-inning rally. Lopez later scored the first run of the inning on Grogan’s RBI base hit. Right-hander Nick Dunning appeared in his first game of the season for the Freedom. Dunning, trying to bounce back from arm problems that plagued him in 2007, worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to set the stage for the dramatic comeback. The Freedom continue their eight-game season-opening home stand at 6:05 p.m. EDT Saturday against the Chillicothe Paints (2-0). Left-hander Josh Bruns will start on the mound for Florence in his first appearance of the season.
