Wild Things Overcome Six-Run First to Hand Freedom 10-6 Defeat
McKinney's Grand Slam the Second in as Many Nights for Freedom
The Florence Freedom came out swinging at Washington Saturday night with six runs in the first inning but the Freedom bats fell silent for the rest of the night and fell to the red-hot Wild Things 10-6 at Consol Energy Park. The Freedom (5-5) dropped their second straight game to the Wild Things (4-6) despite the early fireworks against left-hander Alan Stidfole. Ten Florence batters came to the plate against Stidfole in his only inning of work with the key blow being right fielder Garth McKinney’s grand slam home run. Right-hander Nick Dunning was making his first start of the season for Florence after two relief outings. He blanked the Wild Things on three hits thru the first three innings before getting roughed up for five runs in the fourth. Only two of the Washington runs were earned due to a pair of errors committed by Florence third baseman Tim Grogan that led to the final three runs of the inning. The Freedom still maintained a one-run lead until the sixth when the Wild Things came all the way back against left-handed reliever Alain Quijano to take the lead for the first time. Quijano (0-1) worked a scoreless fifth inning but a pair of two-out walks helped Washington load the bases with two outs in the sixth. Designated hitter Jacob Dempsey’s two-run single put the Wild Things in front 7-6 and they added to the lead with two more runs in the inning – one on a Quijano wild pitch and another on first baseman Robbie Knapp’s run-producing hit. Meanwhile, the Washington bullpen was dominating the Florence offense. The Freedom were shut out on only two hits over the final eight innings. Right-hander Mike Schellinger (1-0) earned the win with three innings of one-hit relief. McKinney’s grand slam highlighted the Freedom attack. Left fielder Ryan Basham added two hits and an RBI and second baseman Jeff Landry doubled home a run in the first. The Freedom and Wild Things conclude their three-game series at 6:35 p.m. EDT Sunday at Consol Energy Park. The Freedom will start right-hander Liam Shanahan (1-1), while the Wild Things counter with right-hander Chris Rivera (0-1).
