Florence loses first game of home stand in extra innings
Gateway scores three runs in the top of the 12th to stop the Florence winning streak at 3.
The Gatesville Grizzlies ended Florence’s three game winning streak after scoring three runs in the top of the 12th inning. Cody Castle (0-1) gave up his first runs of the season and Florence failed to score in the bottom of the 12th leading to a loss to open a seven game home stand. Gateway struck first when their leadoff hitter Ryne Molone hit a homerun to lead off the game. It was an exciting start to the game as Florence third baseman Tim Grogan led off the bottom of the first with a homerun. Josh Lex scored to tack on an extra run and give the Freedom a 2-0 lead. The Freedom extended their lead to 3-1 in the home half of the 3rd inning. Freedom right fielder Angel Molina hit a two out double to drive in Tim Grogan, who had previously singled in the inning. The Freedom held a 3-1 lead until Stephan Holdren hit a solo homerun in the top of the 4th inning. Florence starting pitcher Nick Dunning (1-0) had retired nine straight batters before the home run in the top of the 4th.
After the Freedom went scoreless in the bottom of the 4th, the Grizzlies scored two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Florence retook the lead in the bottom of the 7th when Josh Lex hit a two run homerun, his first of the season. Gateway evened up the score in the top of the 8th inning on a two out single from Manny Paula. Paula hit the single off Florence reliever Yosandy Ibanez. Ibanez has been brilliant thus far this season, giving up only one earned run in twelve innings pitched. The RBI single from Paula evened up the game and after Florence failed to score in the 8th and 9th innings, the Freedom played their second extra inning game of the season. The game remained scoreless until the top of the 12th inning. Mike Breyman broke the scoreless tie with a two run single. Manny Paula would follow with an RBI single, his second run batted in of the night. Three runs would prove to be plenty, as closing pitcher Robert Romero Jr. pitched out of trouble to shut down the Freedom in the bottom of the 12th inning. The loss drops the Florence Freedom to a 8-7 record while the Gateway Grizzlies improve to a 6-10 record.
