Evansville edges Florence to win 6-4
Loss drops Florence to .500 for the 8th time this season
The Evansville Otters snapped out of their slump against the Florence Freedom. The Otters beat the Freedom for the first time in five tries so far in the 2008 season. Jose Pineda was the player of the game for the Otters. Pineda went two for five with two RBIs and had a spectacular catch, saving at least two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. Evansville scored in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Pineda doubled in the Otter’s leadoff hitter Gered Mochizuki for the first run of the game. The Freedom answered in the home half of the inning, scoring two runs on one hit. Leadoff hitter Tim Grogan extended his hitting streak to eleven games with a leadoff double. He scored when a throw from the Evansville third baseman Ryan Bethel sailed wide of first base. Josh Lex scored the second run of the inning when Angel Molina grounded into a double play to give the Freedom a 2-1 lead. Florence briefly held the lead but the Otters tied the score in the top of the third inning. Pineda drove in his second run of the game with a groundout to short stop Jeff Landry. Evansville scored again in the top of the 5th inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Otters would not lose the lead, as starting pitcher Michael Hyde pitched very well. Hyde went six and two thirds, giving up only one earned run, five hits and six strikeouts on only 88 pitches. The Freedom would have their chances, but it just wasn’t their night. Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the 7th inning, Ryan Basham came to bat with two runners on and two outs. Basham drilled a line drive in the right field gap, but Jose Pineda made a diving catch to rob Basham of extra bases and two RBIs. Pineda robbed the Freedom of at least two runs in the bottom of the 7th; giving the Otters the momentum they needed to close out the game. Florence would have one final shot in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Freedom trailed 6-4 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth when slugger Angel Molina came to the plate with the bases loaded. Evansville pitcher Jon Lewis won the battle, striking out Molina and ending the game. Evansville (13-7) is now 1-4 against the Florence Freedom (10-10). The teams conclude a three game set with the rubber match on Thursday, June 12th.
