Florence bats come alive to take rubber match from the visiting Otters

It was a record setting night for the Florence Freedom (11-10), as they shelled Evansville (13-8) ace Justin Jordan, scoring 18 runs on 18 hits. The Freedom broke their previous high for runs in game. The Freedom scored 17 runs on July 7th, 2005 against Kalamazoo. Florence also got a good start from Liam Shanahan. Shanahan pitched six innings giving up two runs and seven hits to earn his second win of the season.

Evansville struck first in the game, on a solo homer from Daniel Burton. Florence quickly took the lead, with a four run second inning. Florence hit four straight singles to center field scoring four runs in the process.

Florence didn’t let up and after a 1-2-3 top of the third; the Freedom scored three times in the bottom of the third to take a 7-1 lead. Garth McKinney hit a solo homer, his 6th of the season. McKinney had a near perfect day, as he went 4-5 with a homer, two runs scored and an RBI.

The Freedom scored five more runs in the bottom of the 5th, thanks to a two-run homer from Angel Molina. Molina lined a fastball over the left field wall for his 5th homer of the season. After the 5th inning, the red hot Freedom had an insurmountable 12-2 lead.

Life would only get better for the Freedom batters, as they scored six more times before the end of the game. Evansville had to use four pitchers and an infielder to get through the night. Ryan Bethel, the starting third baseman for the Otters pitched a scoreless 8th inning.

When the smoke cleared the Florence Freedom had an 18-6 victory. Florence is hoping to build momentum as they travel to Gateway for a three game series with the Grizzlies.
