GAME RECAP / BOX SCORE

Three Grizzlies Pitchers Shut Down Freedom Offense in 6-2 Gateway Win
Basham, Welch Homer to Account for Runs

Three Gateway pitchers held Florence to its lowest run total of the season as the host Grizzlies posted a 6-2 Frontier League baseball win over the Freedom Friday night at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.

Left fielder Ryan Basham staked the Freedom (11-11) to an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the third inning. The homer was Basham’s fourth and enabled him to tie for the club lead with 18 RBIs.

Florence maintained its lead until Gateway center fielder Michael Campbell drilled a solo homer in the fourth off Freedom left-hander Chris Ingoglia (2-3). Campbell then put the Grizzlies in front for good in the fifth with a three-run homer off Ingoglia, building the hosts’ lead to 5-1.

Gateway starter Brandon Williams (4-1) went the first six innings and recorded nine of the Grizzlies’ 13 strikeouts. Ingoglia lasted just five innings for the second straight start against the Grizzlies, giving up five runs and five hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Florence scored its final run of the night in the eighth when third baseman John Welch belted his fifth home run of the season to bring the Freedom within four runs at 6-2. That was as close as they would get as Grizzlies relievers Zach Gray and Adam Revelette finished off a six-hitter to end a two-game losing streak for Gateway (10-12).

The Freedom suffered from wasted opportunities one night after setting a new club record for most runs scored in a game during Thursday’s 18-6 home victory over the Evansville Otters. The offense stranded 11 base runners Friday, and left the bases loaded twice.

Florence sends left-hander Josh Bruns (3-0) to the mound at 8:05 p.m. EDT Saturday against Gateway left-hander Kevin Hammons (0-2). Gateway has won the first four meetings with Florence this season.
