GAME RECAP / BOX SCORE

Freedom Gain Doubleheader Split with Kings
Saul Pitches, McKinney Hits Freedom to Game 2 Win

Right-hander Everett Saul spun a three-hit shutout and Garth McKinney drove in the game’s only run with a two-out single in the eighth to lift the visiting Florence Freedom to a 1-0 win over the host Kalamazoo Kings in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at Homer Stryker Field.

Sunday’s additional game was scheduled after Saturday’s game was rained out.

Kalamazoo rode the complete-game pitching of right-hander John Brownell (9-1) to a 5-1 victory in the opening contest. The only Freedom run came home on Josh Lex’s third home run of the season with one out in the third inning. Left-hander Chris Ingoglia (4-5) took the loss despite giving up only three earned runs in seven innings. Ingoglia fanned eight Kings hitters and walked only two.

Game two was a pitchers’ duel between Saul (6-1) and Kings right-hander Joe DiPietro (2-4). The Freedom finally broke through for the game-winner after DiPietro walked designated hitter Nick Salotti to begin the eighth. Matt Hackney came in to run for Salotti and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Billy Mottram. Freedom catcher Eddie Gonzalez popped out to third for the second out, and Kings manager Fran Riordan decided to change pitchers. Riordan went with his ace closer Brandon Parillo, whose 14 saves lead the Frontier League. Parillo walked Lex, who was pinch-hitting for shortstop Jeff Landry to put runners at first and second with two outs. After running the count full against McKinney, Parillo then gave up a line-drive hit to center to score Hackney with what turned out to be the game-winning run.

The Freedom are 27-27 after dropping two of three in the series with the Kings. Florence travels to Traverse City to play a three-game series with the Beach Bums beginning at 7:05 pm EDT Monday at Wuerfel Park in Traverse City, Mich.
