Kings Rally From 4-0 Deficit to Hand Freedom 8-5 Defeat
Hunt, Molina Hit Back-to-Back HRs in Losing Effort
Kalamazoo outscored visiting Florence 8-1 over the last five innings and went on to post an 8-5 Frontier League baseball victory Sunday afternoon at Homer Stryker Field in Kalamazoo, Mich. Florence (32-29) grabbed an early 4-0 lead on the strength of the home run ball. Second baseman Billy Mottram led off the second with his sixth of the year to account for the game’s first run. In the third inning, first baseman Kelly Hunt and right fielder Angel Molina connected for back-to-back homers off Kalamazoo starter Bernard Robert to make it a 4-0 contest. Hunt’s home run was his league-leading 21st of the season, while Molina lifted his season total to 16 with his third long ball in the past two games. Meanwhile, Freedom right-hander Liam Shanahan didn’t give up a run until Kings third baseman Jorge Araiza reached him for a three-run home run with two outs in the fourth that cut the visitors’ lead to 4-3. Trailing 5-3 going into the bottom of the sixth, the first-place Kings (38-23) exploded for four runs to take the lead for good. Araiza doubled in the first run and leadoff hitter Brandon Anderson followed with a run-scoring single off reliever Matt Gianini (1-1) to produce the tying run. Right-hander Chris Eberhart came on to face Joe Ramos and walked him to put runners at first and second with two outs. Designated hitter Brendan Murphy then broke the tie with a two-run double into the right field corner to give Kalamazoo the lead for good. The Kings added some insurance in the eighth with an unearned run off right-hander Tyler Brandon, who was making his pro debut for the Freedom. Right-hander Joe Catanese (2-3), the second of five Kings pitchers to appear in the game, earned the win with 1.1 innings of relief. Right-hander Rich Babb recorded the final two outs in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season. Kalamazoo, which leads third-place Florence by six games in the East Division standings, has won eight of the first ten meetings between the teams this season. The series continues at 7:05 p.m. EDT Monday at Homer Stryker Field. The Freedom will send rookie right-hander Andy Clark (5-1) to the mound against Kings lefty Trent Lare (5-2).
