FLORENCE, Ky. — The Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, have announced the signing of former Oakland Athletics minor league infielder Jose Brizuela.
Brizuela, 24, was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 46th round of the 2011 MLB draft out of Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, Fla., but instead opted to attend college at Florida State University.
The Athletics later selected Brizuela in the 16th round of the 2014 draft after his junior year at Florida State. He went on to play the next three seasons in the Oakland organization, compiling a .257 batting average while hitting 34 home runs and tallying 140 RBI. Brizuela played as high as the Advanced Single-A level with the Athletics’ affiliate in Stockton, Calif., where he spent time in both 2015 and 2016.
“Jose is a very polished left-handed hitting infielder,” Freedom manager Dennis Pelfrey said. He added that Brizuela has “the ability to play anywhere in the infield and be a force in the middle of the lineup providing protection for (Andrew) Godbold and (Collins) Cuthrell.”
“He fits with our club very well and will be an offensive threat with power and experience.”
The Freedom home opener of the regular season is on Wednesday, May 17. Group tickets and season ticket plans are currently on sale for the 2017 campaign. Fans can guarantee seating for premium promotional dates by calling the Freedom at 859-594-4487.
