SAUGET, Ill. — The Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, selected two players in the 2017 Frontier League Draft on Tuesday at GCS Ballpark, home of the Gateway Grizzlies.
Mark Fowler, an outfielder from West Chester, Ohio, brings one prior season of experience in professional baseball. Following a collegiate career at Wabash Valley College and Wright State University, Fowler spent time during the 2015 season with both the Lake Erie Crushers and the Pecos League’s Roswell Invaders. Over a total of 27 games that season, he batted a combined .250 with a home run and 13 RBI.
“Mark rose to the top in the tryout with his tools as a player,” said Freedom manager Dennis Pelfrey. “He had the fastest 60-yard dash time and a plus arm in the outfield. He's a local Cincinnati player, which was the final factor in us drafting him. He’ll have a very good chance of making our team with his ability to do a lot of things offensively and defensively.”
Catcher Lucas Owens hails from Forest City, N.C., and spent the past four years at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Over his final two seasons with the Bulldogs, Owens hit five home runs and drove in 40 runs while collecting a total of 93 hits.
“Lucas looked solid behind the plate with a good pop time and showed very well in the batting practice segment of the tryout and in the live game,” Pelfrey said. “He has the ability to play some infield as well. He will battle for one of our two catching spots in camp.”
