Mets Purchase Contract of Matt Pobereyko

Closer dominant in second Frontier League go-round

NORMAL, Ill. — The Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, have announced that the contract of right-hander pitcher Matt Pobereyko has been purchased by the New York Mets.

Pobereyko’s signing comes shortly after earning Frontier League Pitcher of the Week honors for Week 6 of the 2017 season. On Tuesday night, the right-hander recorded his tenth save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Normal CornBelters.

Through a total of 18 innings this season, Pobereyko struck out 38 batters while walking only five and allowing just eight hits. He posted a 1-1 record out of the bullpen with a 1.00 ERA, and held opposing hitters to a .129 batting average.

“Much deserved (opportunity) for Pobereyko,” Freedom manager Dennis Pelfrey said. “The Mets have gained a good arm in their organization, and a guy that I feel will be in the organization for a long time and has a legitimate chance to make it to the big leagues. We really appreciate Matt’s time with us and what he’s done for us to help us win some games, but at the end of the day, we wish him all the best and hope we see him in the big leagues soon.”

Pobereyko previously pitched in affiliated baseball in 2016, after his contract was purchased from the Freedom by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is the second Freedom player to sign with a Major League Baseball organization in 2017, following the purchase of right-handed pitcher Logan Longwith by the Colorado Rockies on June 4.

The Florence Freedom are members of the independent Frontier League and play all home games at UC Health Stadium located at 7950 Freedom Way in Florence, KY. The Freedom can be found online at, or by phone at 859-594-4487.
